Inching into June

Last week in writing, we finished writing our Fairy Tale Awards and began typing them. We also started making our floats for the Fairy Tale Parade! Thank you for sending in items for us to use!

In Fundations, we finished our unit on the /ü/ sound.

We continued reading various fairy tales (such as even MORE Cinderella tales from around the world), and also talked in more depth about other types of folk literature: fables, myths, tall tales, and legends. After looking mainly at the similarities and differences between fairy tales and fables, we explored different fables on our own and with partners. While a fairy tale has certain elements we have already identified (such as good vs. evil, “Once upon a time…”, magic, the number 3 or 7 appears often, etc.), a fable has slightly different elements (usually has animal characters, ends with a moral or a lesson, there is one problem involving trickery).

In math, we came back to arrays and explored making equal groups, which is the foundation for understanding multiplication. We learned how to write number models in both addition and multiplication, did some more work with estimating and adding money, and learned how to write money amounts using ¢ or $ (for instance, 307¢ could also be written as $3.07).
